If you shop online, this card still deserves a serious look. The SBI Cashback Credit Card changed the industry by offering Flat 5% Cashback on broad online spending.
Unlike HDFC Millennia (which limits you to specific merchants) or Amazon Pay ICICI (which is strongest only on Amazon), SBI Cashback still works across a wide set of normal online checkouts. It just no longer works as a lazy catch-all for every merchant category code.
Benefit 1: 5% Cashback on Broad Online Spending
Whether you are buying a laptop on Flipkart, ordering food on Swiggy, booking a flight on MakeMyTrip, or buying clothes on Myntra, you can still earn 5% back when the transaction codes as eligible spend.
- Online Spend: 5% Cashback.
- Offline Spend: 1% Cashback.
- Cap (Effective April 2026): Max ₹2,000 cashback for online and ₹2,000 cashback for offline in the same statement cycle. Total max ₹4,000 per statement cycle.
Auto-Credit: The best part? No reward points. The cash is credited directly to your statement within 2 working days of statement generation.
Benefit 2: The 'Hidden' Exclusions (Read Carefully)
Why is there an asterisk above? Because SBI has a strict exclusion list. You get 0% Cashback on:
- Utility Bills, Insurance, Fuel, and Railways
- Rent Payments, Wallet Loads, and Education spends
- Jewellery plus Merchant EMI / Flexipay EMI transactions
- Digital Gaming, Toll Transactions, and Select Government Payments (explicitly added for April 2026)
⚠️ Strategy Tip
Do not use this card for paying your electricity bill, LIC premium, rent, or gaming wallet top-ups. Use SBI Cashback strictly for true shopping and normal online checkout flows.
Comparison: The Battle of Cashback
| Feature | SBI Cashback | Amazon Pay ICICI | HDFC Millennia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | Broad Online Merchants | Amazon Only | 10 Partners Only |
| Rate | 5% (Cap ₹2k online) | 5% (Prime) / 3% | 5% |
| Annual Fee | ₹999 (Waived @ ₹2L) | Free | ₹1,000 |
| Lounge | No | No | Yes (Spend Based) |
The Verdict: Is it worth the ₹999 Fee?
Yes, for moderate spenders.
Even with the new April 2026 limits, spending roughly ₹40,000 online in a statement cycle still maxes out the ₹2,000 online cap, which is enough to crush the fee over a year.
However, if you are a heavy spender (₹50k+ a month online), you will need to pair this with another card like Swiggy HDFC or Amazon Pay ICICI to capture value past the ₹2,000 online ceiling.
